Citizenship Development Programme 2017
This year, Singapore commemorates Total Defence Day with the theme, Together We Keep Singapore Strong. The Total Defence campaign focuses the many ways our people can put Total Defence into action in their everyday lives.
At IPS, pupils participated in various activities which informed them the importance of Total Defence. There were talks, display booths as well as hands-on activities. Canteen vendors were also invited to play their part on this day. They had come together to serve a menu which resembled the food forefathers had during the Second World War. This allowed the pupils to experience the hardship of war and at the same time appreciate the peace they are enjoying now.
On this day, pupils also had the opportunities to visit display booths set up by Singapore Police Force and Singapore Armed Forces. Pupils had the chance to take a closer look at the police car and sit in one. They also had a go at rendering Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid under the guidance of the Singapore Red Cross personnel.
Innova Primary School commemorated International Friendship Day on 7th April 2017 with the theme ASEAN @50. International Friendship Day aims to sensitize our students towards the geo-political realities inherent to Singapore. The main objective of the IFD is to nurture in our students the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people. Students also have to know that while showing respect for other’s culture, we must also retain our sense of identity.
As part of the International Friendship Day (IFD) programme, students were exposed to the different national costumes, traditional games and dance of the ASEAN countries during the pre-assembly programme. On top of that, the school also conducted some activities during the different recess times in which the students had an opportunity to win fun prizes for their participation in the IFD quiz.
Each year, Racial Harmony Day (RHD) falls on 21 July 2017, and it is a day for us to commemorate the Race Riots that occurred on the same date in 1964. Racial Harmony Day is also a day for schools to reflect on and celebrate Singapore's success as a racially harmonious nation, built on rich diversity of culture and heritage. The theme for this year’s RHD is ‘The Singapore Way’. For Innova Primary School, we commemorated the week of Racial Harmony Day with a comprehensive series of activities.
- During the Pre-Assembly and Assembly programmes, we paid tribute to the late Mr Othman Wok. We remembered his contributions that made a multiracial Singapore possible. Performances were put up by guests from Nanhai, Chinese and Malay dances. A speech was also delivered by our Principal, highlighting the importance of a harmonious Singapore. A short film that depicted living harmoniously in our multi-cultural and multi-racial nation was screened.
- The CCE lessons in class emphasised and heightened the awareness of rich diversity that Singapore exhibits.
- There were also many engaging recess activities. The main aim of the recess activities was to accentuate the different races and cultures. The Primary 3 students planned and carried out these activities which comprised quizzes and exhibitions of the traditional costumes, sampling of traditional food as well as playing of traditional games.
NDP 2017 marks 52 years of independence for Singapore and the return of the National Day Parade (NDP) to the floating platform at Marina Bay. The theme this year, ‘One Nation Together’ reminds all Singaporeans that regardless of origin and background, we belong as one people and one nation. It encourages Singaporeans to harness our diversity and to leave no one behind as we strive towards an even brighter future.
The NE Show 2017 was a glorious attempt to celebrate our nation's birthday and this was achieved through the Pre-Parade segment, the Dynamic Defence Display, the Parade and Ceremony and the Show itself. The celebrative atmosphere was evident throughout the preview as schools all around sang the national anthem and recited the pledge with pride and gusto! It was also an opportunity for everyone present to sing ‘Because it’s Singapore!’ composed by Jay Lim as the NDP theme song this year.
In spite of the hot weather and the long hours, the Primary 5 students made the most of such a celebratory occasion as they were indeed privileged to have had the opportunity to witness such a wonderful celebration as proud Singaporeans!
The theme for this year’s National Day is #OneNationTogether. The National Day celebration at Innova Primary School on 8 August 2017 was definitely a colourful and eventful one. Students first gathered at the parade square and witnessed the marching parade from the different CCA groups as well as by our Head Prefect and Assistant Head prefects. In the school hall, the ELDDS and choir members put up a performance that captured the important events that shaped our Singapore history. The choir members led the students in the a sing-a-long session of not only this year’s National Day song but also other favourites such as Singapore Town and songs of Xin Yao. We also had classroom activities that catered to the different levels. The lower primary students brainstormed the different ways Singaporeans could stay united and wrote them down within the outlines of their little hands. The middle primary students tapped on their creativity to come up with a Singapore cheer, while the upper primary students drew different national symbols that highlighted the theme for this year. One thing for sure, the celebration in our school was both memorable and engaging.
